Urinary tract blockage also called blocked cat, urethral obstruction & urinary blockage is most prevalent in male cats. It can be deadly without prompt treatment. The urethra is a tiny tube which can form crystals in it. There can be a genetic disposition to this cat disease or some say the improper diet may be a cause. When the urethra gets totally blocked no urine can get through and the cat get poisoned from the toxic buildup. A cat can die with 24-48 hours when blocked. This is a medical emergency and you cannot put this off till the next day. There are usually signs to indicate a cat is getting blocked. It doesn\'t happen in one day. Cats who are blocked will go in and out of the box and strain and there will be a very small amount. Maybe a few drops. You will start to see blood in the urine if there is more straining with more blockage. Your cat may cry in pain. This is not one of those cat diseases or cat illnesses that can wait till the morning. Crystals can form in the urethra and that is what the blockage is. The vet will place a catheter in the urethra to allow urine to pass through. The cat will need antibiotics and will need to stay for a day or so and vet. If all goes well this will be it. The kitty needs to be on good wet food and drink plenty of water to hopefully prevent another cat blockage. There are special diets for cats who have cat urinary disease. Female cats can also get cat urinary tract blockage but is is most prevalent in neutered males. Pay attention to the same cat urinary blockage symptoms as in the male cat. Urethral obstruction in cats for a few cats can be a chronic condition. If it continues there may need to be surgery of the male cat which is basically a sex change. Even though it is not conclusive by veterinarians, I believe a cat that has a propensity to cat blockage can form crystals from stress.
