
'Korean cooking 101: How to make Korean street food: spicy rice cake (tteokbokki/떡볶이) at home? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Ingredients for this recipe: - Korean rice cakes (떡) x 200g - Korean fish cakes (어묵) x 2 sheets - Onion medium size x1 - Garlic x 1 clove - Soy sauce of any kind x 2 tablespoons - Korean chili paste/Gochujang (고추장) x 2 tablespoons - Sugar x 2 teaspoons - Black pepper ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Soak the rice cakes in water before you start the recipe so that you will have soaked them for at least 5 minutes before you start cooking them. (These come in frozen and non-frozen forms, does not really make a difference, just make sure you freeze them after you\'ve opened the package.) Mince the garlic in preparation for the sauce. Cut the onion into strips. Tip: rinsing the onion in cold water (or leaving in the fridge) before cutting can help reduce eye irritation. Cut the fish cakes into triangular shaped pieces. If it is too hard to cut through, leave them out of the freezer for 5 minutes before cutting. For the sauce: think 2:2:2 - Soy sauce x 2 tablespoons - Korean chili paste/Gochujang (고추장) x 2 tablespoons - Sugar x 2 teaspoons Also add in the minced garlic and some black pepper. *Reduce the amount of chili paste if you prefer a milder taste. Now put everything in a pot along with 300ml of water. Cook on high heat, keep stirring to prevent rice cakes from sticking to the bottom (which they do very easily if not careful!) Turn the heat down to low once it starts to boil. Continue to cook (and stir) for another 5-10 minutes until the rice cakes and onion are soft.
