When cats consume dry food they will usually not consume enough water. Over time they become chronically dehydrated and because there is lack of moisture the urine becomes very concentrated. Dry cat food usually contains a high level of carbohydrates such as corn, wheat, potatoes or rice. When cats ingest carbohydrates it makes their body become alkaline, and it turn creates an alkaline urine. When the urine is alkaline and there is lack of moisture to flush the bladder, struvite crystals can occur. The crystals can join together to make stones and can block the urinary tract. Immediate veterinary care is essential for diagnosis and removal. In order to prevent these struvite crystals, carbohydrates and dry food must be removed from the cats\' diet. When the cat is fed a natural diet of raw meat, the urine maintains an acidic environment. The water content in the meat is at about 75%, so there is no cause for dehydration. With high moisture content and natural ph level, struvite crystals do not occur. To learn more about feeding raw just click on the link below.
