Esophagus is a medical term used for describing the ‘Food pipe’.  Esophagus is tube that provides a passage for food to travel from mouth to stomach.  Esophagus cancer is the sixth leading cause of cancer related deaths.  More than 4 lac people die of esophagus cancer every year.  Let us have a look at the causes of esophageal cancer.  1. Barrett’s Esophagus: Long-term reflux of gastric acid into esophagus leads to a condition called ‘Barrett’s esophagus’.  2. Stricture: Esophagus narrowing secondary to acid reflux or lye ingestion can increase the risk of cancer.  3. Achalasia : A condition of esophagus where the muscular valve at the lower end of the esophagus is not functioning properly.  4. Age: Commonly seen after the age of 50 years.  5. Men: Three times more likely to develop esophagus cancer as compared to females.  6. Tobacco: Cigarette Smoking or chewing tobacco causes a type of esophagus cancer called ‘Squamous Cell Carcinoma’.  7. Alcohol: Heavy drinking over a long period increases risk of cancer.  8. Diet: Lack of fruits & vegetables in diet increases chances of developing food pipe cancer.  9. Obesity: Being overweight increases the risk of a type of esophagus cancer called ‘Adenocarcinoma’.
